With a recent British survey finding that the average person spends two and a half hours a week shopping for groceries, including top-up shops for fresh and forgotten items, it’s no wonder that time and money saving apps are top of the list for shoppers.

By comparison, the same survey also revealed that respondents who bought their groceries online took just 14 minutes to complete their main shop.  Smartphones are helping consumers to shop smarter by combining online price comparison tools with a handheld shopping list that eliminates the need to scribble down items with pen and paper.  Throw in advanced features such as barcode scanners and product searches and it becomes easier than ever to avoid wasting valuable time and money.

A UK-based survey by Marketing Sciences and Qriously showed that 45% of mobile consumers surveyed had used an app at least once whilst grocery shopping and 12% said they always use an app in this context. With widespread smartphone penetration and the development of highly evolved grocery applications, this trend is set to grow.

Whilst almost half of British consumers have used supermarket online shopping and home delivery services at least once, 40% of mobile consumers polled in the same survey were dissatisfied with the current home delivery options available from their supermarket.  Smartphone apps are the ideal option as they bring the advantages of online grocery shopping in store, without the frustrations of home delivery charges and product substitutions.

The shopping revolution doesn’t stop there; mobile grocery apps now mean that lists can be shared with friends and family enabling others to help pick-up items at the best prices when they are passing the supermarket.   Deal finders, real time price and offer comparison tools and save and swap suggestions are also helping people to make their most of their budgets.
